This is no longer a secret. The “Yes I Can” Basketball League has developed a reputation as being Charlotte's premier youth basketball league. It combines professional teaching, competitive games, clean safe gyms, all in a positive atmosphere at an affordable rate.
What makes Yes I Can Basketball Leagues so unique?
Although the leagues attracts top talent - the emphasis is clearly on the development of the player - not the team! We teach Motion Offense in all our leagues (except our “Lil Dribblers League”) It’s an offense that is ideal for youth! This offense teaches screening, how to balance the floor, good spacing, how to move without the ball to get open, dribble penetration, and it requires each player to play all five positions. Our purpose in teaching Motion Offense to all our players is simple; instead of teaching plays, it teaches how to play. Click here to see our Motion Offense Video.
A common complaint in many leagues is that practice times are spent working on team offense, team defense, team out of bounds plays...rarely do players work on individual skills. Not so in Yes I Can Basketball leagues. All practices are conducted by trained Yes I Can staff before each game; insuring plenty of work on improving individual skills. Each player goes through 40 minutes of non stop high energy individual drills before each game. No scheduled practices during the week.
A common complaint in many leagues is that unless you're one of the top players on the team - don't expect to play quality minutes. Not so in Yes I Can Basketball Leagues. Equal playing time is strictly enforced.
The first day of league is devoted to evaluation and teaching. Players will be rated and then drafted. “Our goal is to have the games as close and exciting as possible. We can make this happen by doing our best to balance the talent level of the teams.” Zone defense is not allowed. Players will play strictly man to man defense.
Who runs each league?
Our Yes I Can Basketball site directors are carefully selected experienced coaches that pass extensive background checks. Our staff members are more like youth ministers that have had too much caffeine. They're high energy individuals that simply love to teach and inspire kids. All site directors will personally teach the drills before each league game and be responsible for running their league. See our staff page on our website for Site Director bios. Coach McGovern rotates from site to site each league day.
Why do you call the program “Yes I Can”?
We realized many years ago we have a captive audience. Sure we want the kids to enjoy the game and develop basketball skills, but we also use basketball as a vehicle to share inspirational and motivating messages that all kids benefit from hearing. Guest speakers will deliver motivational / inspirational messages at our leagues and camps.
For convenience, many different locations are used for separate leagues. Leagues are held in clean, safe gyms in the Dilworth Area, South Charlotte and Southwest Charlotte area.
What is the “Select League”?
Cetain leagues will be designated as “Select Leagues” On evaluation day – we “select” boys to play in either the NCAA division, or the NBA division.
The NCAA division is for boys that have average skills, may be somewhat new to the game or simply may need a boost in confidence. The NBA division is for boys that are clearly experienced, have mature skill level and dripping with confidence.
The purpose is simply to offer what players need: an opportunity to train and play against players of similar skill level. This becomes increasingly more of a need as players mature. For parents who have a young player that is showing promise and developing talent, but who do not welcome the challenging rigors of AAU basketball (i.e. travel, time, expense, playing time and commitment,) there needs to be a healthy alternative. We hope this concept can fill that need. Alternatively, we’ve had some young players who are new to the game, but are thrust into a competitive situation against more advanced players: they quickly lose confidence and walk away from the game too soon. The Select League is a healthy solution to this.

How will you evaluate the players?
Our staff will evaluate the players on the first day and assign them to either the
NCAA Division or the NBA Division. It’s not an exact science. We’ll do our best to make accurate evaluations.
What if we don’t agree with your evaluation?
You need to trust us. Feel free to speak with us if you are not comfortable with the evaluation – and as the season progresses, and we see that a change is what is best for your child we’ll consider changing Divisions. Open communication is welcomed. We’ll do our best to act in a manner that is best for your child.
What happens if our family has one boy who is evaluated as being in the NCAA Division and the other son is evaluated to be in the NBA Division. Can we put them together? do our best to keep brothers in the same league. We can move a player from the NBA Division to the NCAA Division if you insist, but we would feel it is not best for your advanced player. Never will we permit a player to move up from the NCAA Division to the NBA Division merely for convenience.
Will the Select League be offered in other age groups and the girls leagues? As the leagues increase in enrollment, we’ll offer this in other leagues.
There are no scheduled practices during the week in any of our leagues – practices are held before each league game.
